Pausa (Latin for "break") in linguistics refers to the end of an utterance. Some sound laws specifically operate in pausa only, i.e. certain phonemes are pronounced differently at the end of a word, when no other word follows. In both Classical Arabic and Literary Arabic pausa affects grammatical ʾIʿrab|case endings, which are normally not pronounced in this case.
